Today in History 8/28

Today in 1861 Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, fell to Union troops. This two-day operation succeeded in closing an important outlet from Pamlico Sound for Confederate blockade-runners. The Union blockade of the South now tightened and made vital European trade more difficult. A decisive blow to the confederacy.
