On Saturday, July 13, Women Supporting Women will host the 9th
Annual Ride for Breast Cancer Awareness, a motorcycle poker run that will begin
and end at the Elk’s Lodge #817 in Salisbury, Maryland. The $20 per rider and
$10 per passenger cost includes lunch. Registration can be completed online at
WomenSupportingWomen.org or on site beginning at 9:00 AM the day of the ride.
Women Supporting Women is a local, grass-roots non-profit organization
dedicated to providing awareness, education and support to all those who are
affected by breast cancer. With no national ties or funding, we rely completely
on our community to help us provide free
services to our neighbors, friends and families right here on Delmarva.

WICOMICO COUNTY FIRE MARSHAL PARTNERS WITH USFA TO KICK OFF NEW FIRE SAFETY CAMPAIGN FOR PEOPLE AGES 50 AND OLDER Community wide Effort to Lower Escalating Fire Death Rates Among Older Population from Careless Smoking, Cooking and Heating
MD, April 18, 2013 – The Wicomico County Fire Marshal today launched A
Fire Safety Campaign for People 50-Plus to prevent the community’s older
citizens from joining fire death statistics that escalate dramatically
beginning at age 65. Fire Marshal Kevin Wright, is conducting the
campaign in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security’s
Federal Management Agency (FEMA). This morning’s presentation was made
to the residents of Pine Bluff Apartments.
approximately 1,100 Americans ages 65 and older die in home fires and
another 3,000 are injured. People ages 65 and older are three times as
likely to die in a residential fire as the rest of the population.
Careless smoking, cooking and heating practices are the top three causes
of fire deaths among people age 65 and older.
“We will teach
people simple steps for safe smoking, cooking and heating their homes –
steps that will help them avoid unspeakable tragedy,” said Kevin Wright,
Wicomico County Fire Marshal. “We will also encourage our older
citizens to maintain their smoke alarms, develop and practice a fire
escape plan, and if at all possible, install home fire sprinklers.”
Wright also noted that the campaign reaches out to the 65-plus
population and to people ages 50 and older who often care for and will
soon enter this high risk group.
In Maryland, people ages 65 and
older made up 28 percent of residential fire deaths from 1989 to 1998
according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).

The Fruitland Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 10th Annual
Easter Parade on March 23, 2013. The parade time is at 10am. and the route
of the parade is from Fruitland Primary School on Division Street to
the Fruitland Little League Field off Brown Street in Fruitland. Line
up begins at 9am at the school. A $10.00 donation is required per entry
to participate, and all donations are used for our scholarship fund.
This parade started 10 years ago as a joint venture with Girl Scout
Troop 1018. They needed a project to earn their silver award, so they
asked the Chamber about doing a parade for Fruitland, known as "Hop
Into Spring". So, we have come from 25 entries originally to almost 100.
This year's Master of Ceremonies will be Mr. Randy Lee Ashcraft,
local country musician. We will have over 90 participants in our
parade, which includes city and county council members, Wicomico County
Sheriff, Wicomico County State's Attorney, local churches,
non-profit organizations, dog clubs, girl scouts, boy scouts, PRMC Mobile
Unit, Library Book Mobile, UMES Band and their cheerleaders,
mascots, volunteer fire departments, local banks, youth pageant
winners(Miss Crustation/Little Mr. & Miss Skip Jack/Mr. Skip Jack),
antique cars, hot rods, horse and carriage, etc. We will also be offering
"pictures with the Easter Bunny" immediately after the parade for a $2.00
fee. All proceeds from our event will go to the Fruitland Chamber's
Scholarship Fund helping a local student right here in Fruitland
Immediately following the parade, Fruitland City Hall and
Fruitland Recreation Commission will be sponsoring an Easter Egg Hunt with
awarded and candy. Fruitland Little League Concession stand will be open
from 10am to noon and other vendors will be set up at the Little
League fields parking lot as well for a fun filled morning for
