today in History

Today in 1861 the U.S. Congress passed the first Income Tax in order raise revenue for the war now at hand. It has been debated that the future intent was to abolish the tax as soon as the war had been paid for.

I guess we are still paying for those muskets.

Also on this day in 1876 Jack McCall in a saloon in Deadwood South Dakota murdered Wild Bill Hickok. Wild Bill was playing poker at the time and was allegedly holding a black pair of 8’s and a black pair of Aces when he died. A hand known ever since as “The Dead Mans Hand”.

Wild Bill was 39 years old.
McCall was later hanged for the iniquity.
